Genesis 11:1, 4, 6, 8 NKJV

Now the whole earth had one language and one speech….

4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”….

6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them…..

8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.

The city of Babel or Babylon, the ancient site and/or capital of Babylonia (modern Hillah) situated on the Euphrates. It means “confusion” or a “mingling/mixing,” according to this biblical account. And in a broader context, Babylon represents a worldly system marked by human pride, confusion, and rebellion against God. 

So I was trying to figure out why. Why was Genesis’ witness of man “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech“ 

considered a negative, while in Acts we see men aligned “they were all with one accord in one place,“ and this was seen very positively. 

May I interject: one key element that distinguishes the two occasions. JESUS!! 

Those at Babel were descendants of Noah following the Flood. God’s wrath had recently been demonstrated with an earth-consuming Flood, in an effort to cleanse the land of all those who were unrighteous. 

On the contrary, those on Mount Olivet had recently witnessed Jesus, the Christ, die on a cross at Calvary, only to then be resurrected. This act enabled all who were unrighteous to now become Righteous by God’s amazing grace. 

At Babel, “every man had one language and one speech.”Everyone had to conform to the one image. 

While at Pentecost, “there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.” Here, instead of one language, there were multiple languages, and regardless of who was there, they were able to hear the Word in their own language. Everyone could be themselves, just who God made them to be, with gifts that God had given each of them, enabling them to shine in Jesus’ righteousness.

When we all get on the same page, we can become very powerful; however, if we get on one accord without Jesus, we’re destined to focus on ourselves. When we align with Jesus in mind, we will bless the nation.
